Notes: * These accounts, though dated for the end of August 2003, do however include several transactions from the early part of September 2003, in order to get them as complete as possible before handing over to the new treasurer. A further $518 is due to the US Office but, unfortunately, the order sent to Barclays Bank towards the end of August 2003 was lost by them and a further request is currently in the process of being acted on by them. This payment will therefore need to appear in the 2003/4 accounts.

There is a further £50 of the Fisher Memorial Fund donation (for bursaries for young biometricians to attend conferences) available in the regional fund. The 2003 regional conference expenditure of £836.79 shown above will need to be included in the final accounts for that conference (being run by the Applied Statistics Department of Reading University).

I certify that the above is a correct statement of the financial position as shown by the account books and other documents shown to me.

TREASURER'S REPORT 2002/3

For the first time since taking over as treasurer, the paper accounts have shown an excess of income over expenditure, which is very pleasing in this my last year of office! This has been the aim ever since raising the subscription rates in 2001 and has now been achieved by more careful budgeting and planning of expenditure by the committee. Meeting expenses have been assessed prior to the holding of the meetings; also none of the invited speakers for the March meeting claimed expenses. Costs for production and distribution of regional newsletters have been reduced, primarily due to increased use of electronic formats, although we will still return hard copy formats for all those who so wish.

Once again we are very grateful to the Fisher Memorial Trust for their generous donation of £500 for bursaries to assist `young' biometricians to attend the regional conference in Reading in October 2003. Three bursaries of £150 each, to cover registration costs, have been awarded.

Overall, this has been a very satisfactory year for the region financially and, with continued budgeting and planning, I see no need for any increase in subscription rates to the region in the near future despite the expected increase in dues required from the US office. I have found the job of treasurer both challenging and interesting. I wish the incoming treasurer every success and request all members to pay their 2004 subscriptions on time and at the appropriate rate to make the first year of new office that much smoother and easier!

Gillian M Arnold, Treasurer
