TREASURER'S REPORT 2000/1

Subscriptions were raised this year, for the first time since 1994 despite dues payable to the US Office rising by small amounts approximately biennially. This was in accordance with the principle followed by previous treasurers of raising subscriptions in larger steps as infrequently as possible, when the local regional funds started running at an appreciable loss. In 2001 this clearly had the effect of causing a number of members to question their membership of the society and subsequently resigning, although most did not cite the increase as their reason, rather a re-evaluation of their current situation in respect of the appropriateness of the aims and activities of the Biometric Society. Hopefully the membership will now settle again, and new members be encouraged to join. Two reminders were sent to members who failed initially to raise their subscriptions, and these were successful in recouping the outstanding dues in all except 20 cases (from an original 135!). These 20 members still in arrears will be sent another reminder prior to subscription for 2002 being due.

The regional fund includes £1690 which will be offered to `young' biometricians in the form of bursaries to attend the IBC-2002 meeting in Freiburg, thanks to the generosity of the Fisher Memorial Trust over several years. This year meeting expenses were variable, the November 2000 meeting costing the society ~ £600, but the March 2001 meeting only ~ £275, with the summer meeting free thanks to the generosity of Pfizer

Despite the rise in subscriptions, the region still has a deficit on paper for the year of ~£96. However, this is due solely to two items which rightly should have appeared in previous years' accounts but for which invoices were not submitted until the 2000/1 financial year: ~£292 from 1999/2000 summer meeting (invoice not submitted until 31.12.2000), £350 for postage from 1995-2000 (submitted on behalf of NIBSC/Pitney Bowes, 12.10.2000). The financial position of the region therefore appears to be satisfactory, particularly if membership can be increased, and no further rise in subscriptions should be required for several years.
